Well, you can think: why did they do this? Well, I searched in the past and I've found that rapidshare.com has almost been closed by the GEMA the 02/18/2008 (rapidshare.de had some problems as well):
On 19 January 2007, news broke that German collections agency GEMA had claimed to have won a temporary injunction against both RapidShare.de and RapidShare.com. “The latter is said to have used copyright protected works of GEMA members in an unlawful fashion,”. To date RapidShare has claimed not to have any knowledge of the content uploaded by the users and of not being in a position to control the content. Through its injunctions the District Court in Cologne had now however made it clear to the company that the fact that it was the users and not the operator of the services that uploaded the content onto the sites did not, from a legal point of view, lessen the operator’s liability for copyright infringements that occurred within the context of the services, the spokesman added. Currently rapidshare is not working.
Both RapidShare.de and RapidShare.com sites are currently still operating and the consequences, if any, of the claimed injunction have yet to be seen. So far, they have not been sued.
Another possibility is the revenue. Rapidshare.com had been declining the last months due to his severe restrictions to download and the consequent increase in Rapidshare.com Premium Tools.You know that rapidshare.com is lot more used that rapidshare.de (outside Germany, of course).
It is a big marketing trick?
If don't know, SEO exists to improve the SERPs of the websites. When a website is transferred to a new domain, here rapidshare.de to rapidshare.com, you use a 301 redirect. With that, all links will be redirected to the new domain. The big difference with the 302 redirect is that it is permanent, in other words all the backlinks are transfered. Ranking is mainly based on backlinks, specially for Google, and imagine a 1,273,993 link boost! This would be a great boost to any site, isn't it? For example, File Hosters Tools: Free Premium has about 1,000 backlinks... Look at the statistics of both sites today, 03/03/2010:

You see, the owner is the same: Christian Scmid, again and again !
Rapidshare.com and Rapidshare.de are the same thing.
Now together, they will try to increase their popularity again.
Last thing: rapidshare.com has started an update in february and finished the 1st of march, the same day rapidshare.de closed. Coincidence?

The upgrade that was announced on February 1st has been successfully implemented, and all the work has been completed. Thus the capacity problems have been resolved.
Of course, we will keep an eye on our systems and upgrade them again whenever necessary.
